Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Real Madrid star Aurélien Tchouaméni after their 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday (January 5). The Reds have reportedly made a £41 million bid for the French midfielder.
The Merseysiders were held to a point at Anfield over the weekend as Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah got on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo found the back of the net for Manchester United.
Liverpool are still at the top of the Premier League with a substantial six-point lead over second-placed Arsenal. They have a game in hand over the Gunners as well, placing them in pole position to win the title race.
However, the Reds remain keen on bolstering their squad in January and they've rekindled their interest in Real Madrid's Tchouaméni. According to recent reports, Madrid are open to selling the midfielder, who's failed to live up to expectations at the Bernabeu, amid interest from Liverpool and Chelsea.
Spanish outlet Fichajes.net now claims that the Reds have tabled a £41 million offer to secure his services right after they dropped points against Manchester United (via Fichajes.net).
Liverpool were close to signing Tchouaméni in 2022 when the French midfielder was in the final 12 months of his contract at AS Monaco. However, he rejected the Merseysiders in favor of a move to Real Madrid. With the 24-year-old struggling for form in the Spanish capital, a move to Anfield could finally materialize this window.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot on whether Real Madrid links affected Trent Alexander-Arnold's performance against Manchester United
Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Manchester United was a game to forget for Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the England international putting on a subpar display by his standards.
His poor attempt at a pass in the second period eventually landed in United's possession and led to their opener. Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Madrid.
While the Merseysiders are trying hard to extend his contract, which expires this summer, Madrid have not backed down in their pursuit of the 26-year-old right-back.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Reds boss Arne Slot was asked whether the Real Madrid rumors affected his performance. The Dutchman denied any such claim and said (via GOAL):
"I don't believe in those things. I think nine out of 10 people will tell you that it affected him but I'm one of the 10 that tells you I don't think that affected him."
"I think it is more difficult for Trent to play against Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot than it is the rumors that were there in the week. That's my opinion, but everyone will probably tell you it's to do with the rumors."
Liverpool when next be in action away to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday (January 8).
