Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, according to Marca (via Caught Offside). Carreras has been outstanding in the 2024-25 season for Benfica, registering four goal contributions in 16 games.
The 21-year-old has grown to be Benfica's first-choice left-back option in recent months. His impressive performance has attracted some big-money clubs including his former club Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Liverpool's interest in signing the Spaniard could be tied to their quest to increase the depth at left-back. Carreras could be seen as a long-term replacement for Andrew Robertson.
The Red Devils sold the youngster to Benfica for €6 million last summer. Their interest in signing Carreras could be tied to the fitness situations of both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw. Both players are yet to feature for the Red Devils in the ongoing 2024-25 campaign.
As per Caught Offside, Carreras has a release clause of €50 million in his contract with Benfica. But Manchester United could trigger a buy-back option of €20 million. This could give the Red Devils an advantage over Liverpool in the race to sign Carreras.
The left-back failed to feature for the United first-team but made four appearances for the U21s side.
Manchester United and Liverpool are also interested in signing Jonathan David - Reports
The Red Devils and Liverpool are also interested in signing Lille's Jonathan David, according to a report by Foot Mercato (via Transfer News Live).
David has had a brilliant start to the 2024-25 season. He has scored 13 goals and registered two assists in 19 games across all competitions for Lille, putting him on the radar of several European giants.
David's current contract with Lille expires next summer, and he's yet to sign an extension. This could be why several clubs in Europe, including Juventus and Inter Milan, are currently monitoring his situation.
It will be interesting to see if Lille will be able to convince him to sign a new contract. If he fails to sign a new deal, he could leave Lille as a free agent next summer, with Juventus believed to be the frontrunners to sign the player.
