Liverpool set to make surprise move for Euro 2024 star as they eye Alisson replacement: Reports

Alisson Becker has been Liverpool
Alisson Becker has been Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper since 2018.

Liverpool are reportedly set to launch a move to rope in Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Mamardashvili, 23, has emerged as one of the top up-and-coming shot-stoppers in the world in the recent past. He helped Valencia finish ninth in the 2023-24 La Liga standings, registering 13 clean sheets and shipping 41 goals in 37 league matches in the process.

A Dinamo Tbilisi academy product, Mamardashvili relished a fine UEFA Euro 2024 campaign. He oversaw one clean sheet and recorded a mammoth 29 saves in four outings for Georgia in the tournament.

Now, according to Spanish news website Relevo, Liverpool are determined to sign Mamardashvili this summer. They are planning to snap the goalkeeper up for a fee of around £26 million and keep him loaned out until Reds superstar Alisson Becker decides to depart.

However, the Merseyside club are expected to face competition from Bournemouth in their pursuit of the Georgia international. Should Arne Slot's club win the transfer race, they could decide to send the towering shot-stopper on a season-long loan to Andoni Iraola's side.

Alisson, meanwhile, has a contract until June 2027 at the Reds. The 31-year-old is likely to continue as his team's first-choice goalkeeper after keeping 11 shutouts in 32 overall appearances last campaign.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot sheds light on contract talks with 25-year-old defender

During a recent press conference, Reds head coach Arne Slot was queried to shed light on Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract situation. He replied (h/t The Athletic):

"We didn't speak about his commitment. We only spoke about the way I wanted him to play and how he could fit in that style. He was mainly focused on the Euros at that moment we spoke and I saw some clips from people recently showing me that he looks really fit and sharp. I can't wait to see him train."

Slot, who previously helped Feyenoord win two trophies, continued:

"But some others did quite well on the tour so it is interesting to see if the others come back and the level goes up even more. We have a good platform to build from and not just because of this tour. Jurgen [Klopp] left this squad in a very good place. Now, it is up to us to keep performing like Liverpool did for so many years."

Alexander-Arnold, 25, currently has a deal until next June. As a result, he is said to have emerged as a top transfer target for Real Madrid.

So far, the Liverpool right-back has found the back of the net 19 times and laid out 81 assists in 310 games across competitions for his side.
