Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing KAA Gent forward Momodou Sonko. The Sweden U21 international is regarded as one of the most promising young forwards in world football.
The Reds are currently dealing with the contract situation of Mohamed Salah. The 32-year-old's contract expires next summer and as per him, he has received no offer for an extension so far. Even if he does end up staying at Anfield, he could be expected to move towards the twilight of his career soon.
Hence, Liverpool are planning for the future. As per Football Insider, they have identified Sonko as a potential target. The Swedish forward can play across the frontline but mainly plays on either wing. Some even liken him to Arsenal star Bukayo Saka due to his trickery, creativity, and directness.
The 19-year-old has scored three goals in 15 games for KAA Gent across competitions this season, having started eight times. He previously played for Swedish club Hacken, where he registered 14 goals and eight assists in 44 games across competitions.
Arne Slot provides update on if Liverpool will make signings in January
The Reds have had an exceptional start to life under Arne Slot this season. They sit atop the Premier League table and the UEFA Champions League table, having lost just one game across competitions. Liverpool could look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window to push for trophies this season.
In a pre-match press conference ahead of their clash against Newcastle United away on December 4, Arne Slot said about transfers (via Liverpoolfc.com):
"We are having discussions every day, no matter if there is a window coming up or not. We always talk about the team, which players we like, which players are maybe not in the best place – fortunately we talk more about the ones that do well because almost all of them do really well.
"And yeah, it is a bit of a worry that three defenders are out at the moment. But the good thing is if the window opens, the defenders are back. I've said many times in the beginning of the season, I'm so, so happy with the squad [we have], and that's not to say if there will be a chance in the market..."
Liverpool only made two signings in the summer - Federico Chiesa from Juventus and Giorgio Mamardashvili from Valencia. The latter has stayed with the Spanish side and will join the Reds next summer.
