Manchester United are planning a move for Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell in January, according to Caught Offside (via @UtdDistrict on X). The Red Devils are keen to address the position, which has been their bane for a season and a half, at the turn of the year.

The Premier League giants have been without a specialist left-back for a while. Tyrell Malacia is yet to appear for the senior team since picking up a knee injury in the summer of 2023.

The Dutchman recently returned to action for the Under-21s and could be available for selection later this month. Luke Shaw's struggles with injuries, meanwhile, have shown no signs of ending either.

The Englishman missed 50 games for club and country last campaign due to various injuries. He is yet to kick a ball this season and is currently out with a calf injury.

New Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has identified the position as one that needs immediate attention. The Red Devils are long-term admirers of Ben Chilwell and were linked with the player in the summer.

While the transfer failed to materialize, they are considering a move in January. The 27-year-old is no longer part of Chelsea's plans and will be allowed to leave. The Englishman has appeared just once under Enzo Maresca this season, against Barrow in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Chilwell has nine goals and 11 assists from 123 games for the Blues till date. Meanwhile, Manchester United are also closely monitoring former player Alvaro Carreras, who left the club to join Benfica this summer. The Red Devils have a buyback clause for the Spanish left-back.

Manchester United and Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League earlier this month. It was Ruud van Nistelrooy's second game in charge as the Red Devils' interim manager.

The two teams have endured contrasting fortunes this season. The Blues parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino this summer and appointed Enzo Maresca as his replacement.

The Italian manager has done well so far, with the London giants now in third place in the Premier League table after 11 games. Manchester United, meanwhile, are 13th, 13 points behind leaders Liverpool.

The Red Devils have won four and lost four games in the league this season. They will face Chelsea next in the league on May 18, 2025, at Stamford Bridge.
