Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. According to The Sun, the Red Devils are looking to sign the 24-year-old as their second-choice shot-stopper.

Erik ten Hag's side currently have Altay Bayindir as the backup to Andre Onana. However, he has barely been trusted by the Dutchman, making just two appearances for the side since joining in the summer of 2023.

The report further claims that Manchester United may also provide a pathway into the first team for Patterson. While Andre Onana had a difficult start to life at Old Trafford after moving from Inter Milan, the Cameroonian has gone to find his footing, becoming one of the side's better players amid their recent struggles.

Patterson joined the Championship side in 2021 and eventually established himself as the first-choice keeper in 2022. This season, he has made six appearances for the side, keeping four clean sheets while also letting four goals in.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag suggested that he needed more time to get the side organized following a dismaying 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, September 29. The Dutchman stated that the ownership group and the players remained committed to their goals.

Speaking after the game, he said (via Forbes):

“I am not thinking about this. We all made in the summer the decision to stay together, as an ownership, a leadership group. Also, we made the decision from a clear review what we have to improve and how we want to construct a squad. But we knew it will take some time, how the window went, some players late in like Manuel Ugarte.”
“Also, we have to make some improvements in organization, we still have some injuries, we need some time. We are all on one page or in one boat together, the ownership, the staff and the players as well. I don’t have that concern.”

It was a difficult night out for the Red Devils as they were completely outplayed by Ange Postecoglou's side. A 3-0 defeat, compounded by a red card to Bruno Fernandes, made it a forgettable fixture.

Manchester United currently find themselves 12th in the league, with two wins and three losses from their opening six fixtures. They will be hoping for a quick turnaround as they already find themselves six points off the top four.
