Manchester United are reportedly at risk of losing their £900 million kit sponsorship deal with Adidas if they get relegated from the Premier League this season. This is according to a report from Sky Sports, which says that the German sportswear brand could rip up this contract if the Red Devils were to drop down to the Championship.
At the moment, Ruben Amorim and Co. are sitting in 14th place in the Premier League standings. Most recently, they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hand of Newcastle United on Monday (December 30).
If the results of the next couple of games don't go their way, Manchester United could indeed be thrown into a relegation battle. They're only seven points above Ipswich Town, who are 18th and occupy the final place in the relegation zone.
The end to the Adidas deal would be a significant financial blow, given the agreement's worth and the fact that it would have lasted till 2033. These parties put pen to paper in 2023 and announced that the Red Devils would receive £90 million a year as part of the partnership.
Amorim, the club's head coach, also claimed that his side could end up in a relegation scrap, saying (via GIVEMESPORT):
“I think that it is a possibility. We have to be clear with our fans. So we have to change something. This season, it will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger, and we have to fight.”
Up next for Manchester United is an extremely difficult challenge in the Premier League against Liverpool at Anfield (January 5).
Manchester United given a negligible chance of relegation in 10,000 simulations by supercomputer
While Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that his side may be drawn into a relegation battle, the Opta Supercomputer doesn't. After running 10,000 simulations following the Red Devils' defeat to Newcastle United, the machine found that the club were relegated only 0.15% of the time.
This means that they only dropped down on 15 occasions out of a possible 10,000 scenarios. However, the computer does take into consideration the historical performances of the club, which has a role in reducing the odds for Amorim and Co.
Either way, the Red Devils need to start racking up victories, without which they could have a very interesting finish to the Premier League season. Manchester United have now lost four consecutive matches across competitions.
