Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid just days into Ruben Amorim's reign at Manchester United. The Portuguese tactician might face a fight to keep hold of one of the Red Devils' brightest stars.
Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Atletico is preparing an offer for Garnacho, whom they had on their books during his youth days. The Argentine winger was a member of the youth setup at the Wanda Metropolitano until October 2020.
Garnacho, 20, joined Manchester United and rose through the Premier League giants' youth ranks before debuting at senior level. He's been a prominent member of the first team this season, registering seven goals and four assists in 18 games across competitions.
The versatile Argentina international, who can play on either wing, recently received criticism from United fans. He scored a stunner in a 3-0 win against Leicester City last weekend but initially didn't celebrate amid the scrutiny.
Amorim will likely have any say over Garnacho's future having replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach at Old Trafford. He's yet to even oversee a game thus far so attending to this situation probably isn't a massive priority at the moment.
Garnacho has just under four years left on his contract with the Red Devils. The Spanish-born attacker's desire to stay or go may depend on his role under Amorim.
Alejandro Garnacho predicted Manchester United to have a 'great season' amid Amorim's arrival
Garnacho gave his thoughts on Manchester United's struggles this season that ultimately led to Ten Hag's sacking. He remained optimistic that the club would have a good campaign (via The Mirror):
"Of course, it’s a bit difficult at this moment, but the most important thing is to keep going. The season has only just started and we need to try and improve as a team to win every game and make our fans proud. Hopefully, we will improve over the next few months to have a great season and to win a trophy."
Amorim is tasked with overseeing a dramatic turnaround at United with the club currently occupying 13th place in the league. He's arrived at Carrington and greeted players who haven't jetted off for international duty with their countries.
The Red Devils look set for a new formation, with Amorim preferring a 3-4-3 setup. This could affect Garnacho, as he might be asked to play wingback.
