Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing England international and rumoured Liverpool target Marc Guehi as they look to bolster their squad for the 2024-25 season. Eddie Howe is an admirer of the 24-year-old centre-back, whose stock has continued to rise since he moved to Crystal Palace in 2021.
The Englishman is now set to move to Howe's side in a deal that would make him one of the most expensive English defenders of all time. According to the Telegraph's Luke Edwards, the fee is set to be "well in excess of £60 million."
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Eagles are looking for £65 million for the defender.
Marc Guehi was one of the unsung heroes of England's Euro 2024 campaign where they reached the final and narrowly lost 1-2 to Spain. The centre-back, who came through the Chelsea youth system, made his first senior appearance for the Blues in the 2019-20 season.
After a couple of seasons on loan at Swansea, he was signed by Crystal Palace for a reported fee of £18 million in the summer of 2021. Ever since, he has been a mainstay for the Eagles, making 111 appearances for them so far.
Double blow for Liverpool dealt by Newcastle United
Liverpool and Newcastle United were reportedly embroiled in a transfer saga earlier this window. There were talks of Magpies winger Anthony Gordon and Reds' centre-back Joe Gomez swapping clubs in a player-plus-cash deal totalling up to around £75 million in late July.
Given their interest in Anthony Gordon, the Reds were reportedly looking to take advantage of Newcastle's need for funds and a center-back by using Gomez as a makeweight. The club had also reportedly booked a medical before the move fell through as the Magpies were able to raise funds through other sales.
Newcastle United's move for Guehi will come as a double blow for Liverpool. The Reds would not only lose their rumoured target with this move, but it is also likely to end Newcastle's pursuit of versatile Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
