Real Madrid are plotting a surprise move for Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker in the ongoing January transfer window, according to Graeme Bailey of TBR Football. The defending LaLiga champions are keen on signing a fullback in the window, and Walker has emerged as one of the targets. However, it has also been reported that Madrid only want to sign Walker on loan, and not permanently.
The English right-back, once considered among the best in the world, has had a recent downfall at City. He has played in 18 matches across all competitions this season but has failed to contribute or score a goal. Real Madrid's recent 5-2 defeat to Barcelona has further forced them to pursue defensive reinforcements.
Walker has repeatedly been looked over by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in recent games. He has played in only 15 Premier League games and two in the UEFA Champions League. Notably, he hasn't started his side's last four league matches.
The 34-year-old's time at City could end in January as he has reportedly handed in a transfer request. He has played 319 matches for them across all competitions, scoring six goals and bagging 23 assists.
Kyle Walker's acquisition will give Real Madrid a big boost
The English fullback's current contract with City expires in 2026, and the defending Premier League champions will be keen on getting a sizeable sum for potential his sale. Before moving to Manchester in 2017, Walker was a crucial player for Tottenham Hotspur, appearing in 229 matches across all competitions for them, scoring four goals and bagging 18 assists. Walker has also been capped 93 times for England.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, currently sit in the second position of LaLiga table with 43 points, a point behind city rivals Atletico Madrid. Los Blancos have struggled with injuries in the ongoing season, especially in the defensive department, including right-back Dani Carvajal. If they happen to sign Walker, it will give them a massive boost at the back for the remainder of the season.
