Real Madrid plot surprise move for Manchester City star

Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a move for Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol as they look to bolster their defensive options. As reported by Relevo via Tribal Football, Los Blancos are monitoring the Croatia international alongside Spurs' Micky van de Ven.

Real Madrid have been severely stretched by injuries this season, particularly at the back. Two of their star defender Eder Militao and David Alaba are both out with ACL injuries leaving them with only Antonio Rudiger as the only senior centre-back.

Carlo Ancelotti has been forced to use Aurelien Tchouameni at center-back while also promoting Raul Asencio to the senior side. Jesus Vallejo is another senior option but the Italian clearly does not fancy the 27-year-old as he has played just 10 minutes of first-team football.

With Alaba and Rudiger both in their thirties now, it is quite evident that Real Madrid needs to strengthen at the back. They are understood to be looking for a left-footed defender who can play either as a center-back or left-back.

Gvardiol and van de Ven are both left-footed and are equally comfortable as a center-back or a left-back. They have both been key players for Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, since their moves from the Bundesliga in 2023.

Gvardiol joined Manchester City from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £77 million. He has made 68 appearances for the Cityzens so far and has already won four trophies.

Despite the Cityzens' dismal run of form this season, Gvardiol has been pretty decent and has been an unlikely source of goals. He has four goals in 17 Premier League games this season.

Real Madrid rejected an offer from Manchester City for breakout star last summer: Reports

Real Madrid reportedly snubbed an offer from Manchester City for defender Raul Asencio in the summer. As per Tribal Football, the Sky Blues made a €6 million offer for the 21-year-old and wanted to loan him out to sister club Girona.

However, Carlo Ancelotti's side did not entertain the offer for the young defender which has proven to be the wise decision. Asencio, who did not make his debut before this season, now has nine appearances for Los Blancos.

The Spanish capital club has struggled with injuries this season which has seen Asencio break into the senior side. The Manchester City target was formerly in the youth ranks of Veteranos del Pilar and Las Palmas before joining Real Madrid in 2017.
