Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to sell full-back Ferland Mendy as they plan to reshape the squad as early as January 2025. According to Fichajes.net, Mendy is one of Ancelotti's favorite players at the club but they could offload him soon.
The 29-year-old Frenchman had extended his contract until 2027. However, he is no longer considered untouchable. Since signing the contract extension, he has struggled to meet expectations, especially in important games against Liverpool and Barcelona.
Most notably, in the Liverpool game, Mendy's poor tackle on Mohamed Salah saw Real Madrid concede a penalty.
Moreover, Carlo Ancelotti has opted to pick Mendy's backup Fran Garcia more consistently this season. The latter was handed 90-minute spells in their most recent La Liga games against Osasuna and Leganes, helping them keep clean sheets. The 25-year-old has also played 10 league matches this season, while Mendy has played nine.
Carlo Ancelotti opens up on Real Madrid loss to Liverpool
On November 27, Real Madrid suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield, which was their third UEFA Champions League defeat this season. However, Ancelotti liked how his team played.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said (via Forbes):
"I liked the team, because we competed well against the most difficult opponent on the continent. The result is correct, they deserved to win. And the situation doesn't change much, because if you win today and the top eight win...
"We are going to qualify and we are going to compete for the title as we did last year. The path is this, to be a team again."
Los Blancos sit in 24th place in the Champions League table, and close to getting knocked out from the group phase. They will need to improve their performances if they are to get through to the next stage of the competition.
