Alphonso Davies has reportedly rejected Bayern Munich's latest contract offer amid interest from Real Madrid. The Canadian left-back is on the La Liga giants' radar and could head to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
Cadena SER reports that Davies has turned down a new renewal offer from Bayern. The Bavarians are considering speaking to Los Blancos about selling the pacey full-back.
Davies, 23, is Real Madrid's top target to bolster the left flank of Carlo Ancelotti's defense. He was excellent at the Allianz Arena last season, registering three goals and six assists in 42 games across competitions.
Los Merengues are prepared to part ways with Ferland Mendy in pursuing the 45-cap Canada international. The Frenchman's future looks likely to lie away from the Bernabeu.
Davies gave Real Madrid a glimpse of his talent in this season's UEFA Champions League semifinals. He scored a stunning strike as Bayern lost 2-1 (4-3 on aggregate) against Ancelotti's European Champions.
Bayern are under pressure to cash in on Davies due to his contract expiring next year. Madrid are willing to spend as much as €30 million, including add-ons on the Canadian.
AC Milan's Theo Hernandez is an alternative, and their former left-back is reportedly open to returning to the Bernabeu. Davies is their top priority, and his decision to turn Bayern's extension offer down puts them in a good position.
New Canada boss Jesse Marsch challenges Real Madrid target Alphonso Davies to become a 'good leader'
Davies has become Canadian football's megastar since breaking onto the scene at Vancouver Rapids in 2016. He made his international debut in June 2017, aged 16, and has since made 47 appearances, posting 15 goals and 18 assists.
The Real Madrid target will be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Canada is one of the host nations. He's one of Les Rouges' most experienced players and will be key as they look to impress on home soil in two years.
New manager Jesse Marsch spoke highly of Davies' progression and challenged him to become a leader. The American coach said (via Waking the Red):
"I’m challenging him to do now is to be a good leader, not just a great player but someone who takes care of the group and knows how to keep everyone on track and have the right kind of conversations with players, new players, experienced players."
Davies will represent Canada during Copa America this summer which starts at the end of this month. His nation face Argentina (June 21), Peru (June 25) and Chile (June 30) in Group A.
