Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim could reportedly decide to snub Manchester United in favour of replacing Pep Guardiola at Manchester City in the future.

Earlier this Monday (October 28), the Red Devils let go of Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to their season. They have named Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new interim manager for the time being.

After Manchester United's decision, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reported that the Red Devils are working on a deal to appoint Amorim as their full-time boss. They are ready to trigger Amorim's exit clause of over £8 million as the Portuguese is open to a move.

However, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has recently asserted that Amorim is inclined to wait for the job at Manchester City. He wrote on X:

"I hear from Portugal a new possibility. Ruben Amorim might decide to wait for City if Pep leaves. But United pushing for a deal. And [Fulham manager] Marco Silva has also been approached by Manchester United."

Amorim, who was reportedly linked with Liverpool earlier this May, has made quite a name for himself in Portugal. He has guided Sporting to two league titles and two Taca da Liga trophies since arriving in 2020.

The former Benfica midfielder has opened the 2024-25 campaign on a stellar note. He has guided his current team to 12 wins in 14 games in all competitions, helping them score a staggering 40 goals so far.

Manchester United interim boss urged to play a three-man defence in future by Gary Neville

Speaking on Sky Sports, Manchester United legend Gary Neville urged Ruud van Nistelrooy to play a three-man defence in their upcoming encounters. He said (h/t Metro):

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will do his very best, I have thought for a number of months that looking at the players United have, they may be better suited to going three at the back, just purely because of a lack of a centre-back pairing and the full-backs, to be fair, look better going forward than they do defensively. So maybe that could happen, maybe that might give them a little bit more comfort."

Manchester United are currently 14th in the 2024-25 Premier League table with 11 points from nine games, scoring just eight in the process.

The Red Devils will face Leicester City in an EFL Cup last-16 clash on Wednesday before taking on Chelsea in the league on November 3.
