Ruben Amorim has reportedly identified former Manchester United left-back Alvaro Carreras as a player he would like to work with at the club. The 21-year-old left-back is currently playing for Primeira Liga club Benfica.

Amorim was appointed as Manchester United's head coach following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag at the end of October. The Portuguese manager will make his debut in the Red Devils' match against Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday, November 24, at Portman Road Stadium.

After taking charge of the squad at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim is expected to make additions to strengthen it. According to CaughtOffside, Manchester United plan on signing a left-back in the January transfer window. Chelsea's Ben Chilwell and Alvaro Carreras are two players being considered by United, as per the report.

Alvaro Carreras moved to United in 2020 and was promoted to the first-team at Old Trafford in 2022. He had loan spells at Preston North End and Granada before joining Benfica on loan in January 2024. The deal included an optional buy-clause, which was exercised by the Primeira Liga side this summer.

According to CaughtOffside, Benfica value Alvaro Carreras at around £41 million, but United have the option to sign him for about £16 million in January due to a buy-back clause.

Alvaro Carreras provides response on links to Manchester United

Alvaro Carreras shared his response when asked about rumors linking him with a return to Manchester United. Prior to his dismissal last month, Erik ten Hag mentioned that the Premier League giants are monitoring the Spanish defender. The Dutchman said (via UtdDistrict):

"We have to see and assess the situation if he can be an option for us. But playing at Man United is not so easy, playing in the Premier League for Manchester United is not so easy. You need experience, also development. You get development from playing for better clubs and in better leagues."

While addressing the reports linking him with a return to Old Trafford, Alvaro Carreras clarified that his current priority is performing for Benfica. The 21-year-old said:

"I only think about Benfica. I’m only focused here. I’ll try to keep up the same level, try to help the team as much as possible. I’m just another player on the team."

Alvaro Carreras has contributed to seven clean sheets in 16 appearances across competitions while registering two goals and two assists for Benfica so far this season.
