Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has identified three key positions to strengthen in the Red Devils' squad, according to Football Insider. Top of the Portuguese tactician's wishlist is a new left-back, a striker, and a central midfielder.
Amorim is currently in the early stages of his spell with United after being appointed as the club's head coach last month. A not-too-convincing start to life as Manchester United manager has prompted the need for possible squad reinforcement either in January or in the summer.
Football Insider has now reported that after a careful assessment of his current squad, Amorim will push for three key additions to his team. The Manchester United head coach has already identified the left-back, striker, and central-midfield positions as areas that need serious reinforcements.
Manchester United's duo of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have shown to be unreliable options at left-back due to recurring injury setbacks. Thus, prompting Amorim to add a new left-back to his side ahead of next season.
The Portuguese tactician is also said to not be fully convinced with United's striking options of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Furthermore, the central-midfield position has also been identified by Amorim for reinforcement. This could be attributed to the question marks surrounding the future and form of central midfielders, such as Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, and Casemiro.
Ex-Manchester United chief scout hints that Red Devils won't be busy in the January transfer window
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford, has suggested that he doesn't expect his former side to be very active in the upcoming January transfer window.
Brown, while speaking to Football Insider, claimed that United manager Amorim had identified key areas to strengthen in his squad. However, the former Manchester United chief scout revealed that a possible winter reinforcement could be difficult due to the limit in the club's spending powers.
He stated that any possible additions to strengthen Amorim's squad might have to wait until the summer, when United chiefs could have more funds to spend. Brown told Football Insider:
"Amorim already has an idea of what he wants to do. I’m told there are three positions they’d like to improve, but it’s notoriously difficult in January. They’re looking at a new left-back, because I don’t think Malacia is good enough, Shaw is still struggling, then you have to play people like Martinez or Dalot out of position.
“They need a centre-forward as well, because the current options aren’t good enough. Hojlund has improved, but he’s not doing enough to prove he should start every week for Man United."
He continued:
“Then, they want to strengthen their midfield as well It doesn’t look like Eriksen is going to be part of his plans, Mount isn’t really a certainty, Casemiro is past his best and will give them a decision to make."
On United's financial constriants, ahead of the winter transfer window, he said:
"Whether he is given the financial backing to do that in January, I’m not certain given the issues they’ve had, but he is already looking to make improvements. Any specific players he wants to add may have to wait until the summer, and I think there will be more finances available to him then as well.”
Next up for Manchester United and Amorim will be a much-anticipated Manchester derby against arch-rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, December 15.
