New Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is planning to take Manchester United's Victor Lindelof to the King Power Stadium in January, according to journalist Graeme Bailey. The Swedish defender is a forgotten man at Old Trafford and is ready to leave at the turn of the year.
Lindelof joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2016 from Benfica and was initially a first-team regular. However, the 30-year-old has dropped down the pecking order of late and is no longer the first choice under Ruben Amorim.
Lindelof's contract with Manchester United expires at the end of this season and he is unlikely to be handed a new deal. Nistelrooy worked closely with the player during his time at Old Trafford this season and is impressed by his attributes.
With the Foxes languishing at 16th in the Premier League table and in danger of relegation, reinforcements are in order in January. Nistelrooy has identified the backline as an area that needs urgent attention and has Lindelof on his wish list.
The Swede has appeared just seven times this season for the Red Devils, three of which have been starts. Interestingly, Victor Lindelof started two of Nistelrooy's four games in charge as interim manager of Manchester United.
Amorim has already implemented his 3-4-3 system at Old Trafford and is likely to push for an upgrade on Lindelof in 2025. The Red Devils could be open to the Swede's departure in January - rather than the summer - as it could help them secure a transfer fee.
How many games have Manchester United won under Ruben Amorim?
Manchester United have registered a mixed start to Ruben Amorim's tenure. The former Sporting CP manager took charge at Old Trafford on November 11.
Amorim started his reign with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in the Premier League. His second game in charge of the Red Devils was the hard-fought 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League last month.
The Portuguese followed that with a fine 4-0 win over Everton in the Premier League. However, disaster struck Manchester United next, as they succumbed to defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the league.
The Red Devils were back to winning ways in midweek, with a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. Amorim has registered three wins and two defeats in his six games so far and next faces Manchester City in the league on Sunday, December 15.
