Serie A giants Napoli are reportedly eyeing a temporary move for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire in the upcoming January transfer window.

Maguire, 31, has fallen down in his club's pecking order this season due to Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro's respective summer arrivals. He has made 14 total appearances for the Red Devils this campaign, scoring one goal along the way.

Now, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.net, Napoli are hoping to strengthen their defence next month to help them in their Serie A title charge. Partenopei boss Antonio Conte is said to be a fan of Maguire's experience and leadership.

Napoli are unlikely to be unopposed in their pursuit of the 64-cap England international, who has a contract until next June at Manchester United. Leicester City and Fenerbahce are also aiming to sign the defender on a temporary deal.

Maguire, who left Leicester for £80 million in 2019, has contributed 12 goals and seven assists in 2220 matches across competitions for the Red Devils.

Manchester United slammed for selling player

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has asserted that his former club should not have parted ways with Scott McTominay earlier this summer. He told Sports Lens (h/t Metro):

"Scott McTominay had been a very important influence at Manchester United even though he wasn't a guaranteed starter. He scored goals and had a big impact and those are the players you don't want to lose as a football club. Leaving might've been a good step for him, as is currently being discussed with Marcus Rashford, but he may well have wanted to stay."

Stam, who played for the Red Devils from 1998 to 2001, concluded:

"He has been a very important player for Napoli and his confidence is growing because he is starting most games and overall, I think selling him was a bad call at United. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions as a club and I understand that, but I wouldn't have been keen to sell McTominay."

Earlier this August, McTominay left his boyhood team to secure a £25 million switch to Napoli. The 28-year-old midfielder has popped up as a vital starter for his new club, registering four goals and three assists in 16 total games for them.

McTominay, 28, spent around 22 years at Manchester United after joining their youth setup in 2002. He helped the Old Trafford outfit win a FA Cup and an EFL Cup, bagging 29 goals in 255 appearances across all competitions in the process.
