Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim was reportedly on a shortlist to take up the vacancy at Liverpool at the beginning of the campaign. According to journalist James Pearce, the former Sporting CP boss was in consideration but was eventually snubbed in favor of Arne Slot.

According to the report, Amorim's three-at-the-back formation was deemed unsuitable for the Reds squad. Further, the management was unsure if his tactics would be enjoyed by the Anfield support.

Amorim boasted a strong set of results in his four-year spell with Sporting. He led the side to their first Primeira Liga in the 2020-21 season, ending a 19-year drought. They repeated the feat in the 2023-24 season and enjoyed a strong start to this year as well.

Eventually, Liverpool settled on hiring former Feyenoord manager Arne Slot after Jurgen Klopp's departure in the summer. Slot had an impressive resume in his three-year tenure with the Dutch side, winning the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup once each while also making the finals of the Conference League.

The decision has certainly proven to be the right one early in his tenure. The Reds have lost just one match and find themselves top of the Premier League and the Champions League heading into Christmas.

Manchester United, meanwhile, had rumors swirling around the future of Erik ten Hag as the 2024-25 campaign began. He had won the FA Cup the previous season but poor performances in Europe and the Premier League had fans questioning his position. Subsequently, another forgettable start to the season meant he was sacked earlier this season, with Amorim chosen to replace him.

Liverpool and Manchester United have expressed an interest in signing Atalanta attacker Ademola Lookman. According to Sky Sport CH, the Premier League giants are keen on adding the Nigerian attacker to their ranks.

Lookman has been a key player for Atalanta since arriving from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022. He bagged a sensational hat-trick in the Europa League final last season as the Serie A side subdued high-flying Bayer Leverkusen. He has carried over his good form into the 2024-25 campaign, collecting 11 goals and five assists in 19 games across competitions.

He could be a key addition to a Manchester United squad looking to reinvent themselves under new manager Ruben Amorim. Meanwhile, he could bolster Liverpool's attacking ranks in case Mohamed Salah departs.
