Arne Slot will reportedly earn €8 million a year in wages when he replaces Jurgen Klopp as the Liverpool boss. That falls significantly short of the German's €17 million a year package at Anfield.
It has been evident for a while that Feyenoord manager Slot has been identified as the ideal replacement for Klopp. Earlier on Monday (May 20), the Reds announced that the Dutchman would officially take the reigns on June 1.
Slot, 45, has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Premier League giants. Meanwhile, it is worth noting that his official title is head coach and not manager, suggesting a hierarchical restructure at Liverpool.
According to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, Slot will nevertheless see his salary increase twofold. The tactician is set to pocket around €8 million a year before bonuses. At Feyenoord, he earned €4-5 million including bonuses.
That would free up some money for the Reds as Klopp earned a significantly higher sum. The newspaper reported last month that the German pocketed a whopping €17 million including add-ons.
Klopp was handed a smaller package when he initially joined the Merseyside-based club on a three-year deal in 2015. He went on to sign three contract extensions in 2016, 2019 and 2022 respectively, seeing his salary increase during the process. Slot will be hopeful of a similar trajectory.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool agreed to snap up Slot from Feyenoord for a deal worth €11 million last month. The agreement will see assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff and head of performance Ruben Peeters follow the 45-year-old to Anfield.
What next for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot?
Jurgen Klopp drew a curtain on his nine-year spell as the Liverpool boss with a 2-0 league win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, May 20. The German then bid adieu to Anfield with an emotional speech. He was later seen dancing at a celebratory party at the Titanic Hotel in the city.
One of his final acts as the Reds manager was to get the fans behind Slot as he chanted the Dutchman's name during his speech on Sunday. The new head coach arrives on the back of an impressive stint with Feyenoord, whom he led to Eredivisie and Dutch Cup glory.
As per The Daily Telegraph, Slot has decided to start the team's pre-season preparations one week early. The Reds are now set to begin their first training sessions in the first week of July. Players participating in the European Championship and Copa America will join later.
