According to a report by Fichajes.net, Xabi Alonso has demanded that Real Madrid sign Martín Zubimendi as his first major acquisition should he join the club. Alonso has been tipped to replace Carlo Ancelotti as Madrid's manager next season by multiple reports.
Ancelotti has helped Los Blancos win multiple trophies under his stewardship. But his contract at the Bernabeu expires in June 2026, leading to links with Alonso.
Meanwhile, the Spanish tactician has been one of the best-performing managers in Europe over the last couple of years. Under his stewardship, Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title last season (2023-24).
As Alonso's potential target, Zubimendi has been one of the most formidable defensive midfielders in Europe in recent years. His ball-winning and ability to stabilize the midfield have been outstanding.
The Spaniard has scored one goal and registered two assists in 21 games for Real Sociedad this season. In 17 LaLiga appearances, Zubimendi has won 99 out of 162 ground duels contested. He has likewise made 45 tackles and registered 34 clearances (via FootyStats).
His versatility to feature in multiple positions could enhance Madrid's midfield if signed. However, he is contracted at Sociedad till June 2027, meaning he might not come cheap.
"It’s very difficult to be Vinícius" - Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti
Los Blancos’ manager Carlo Ancelotti has jumped in defense of Vinicius Junior. This comes after the Brazilian received a red card in the club's 2-1 over Valencia on January 3. In the 79th minute of the game, Vinicius appeared to have pushed goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski and was sent off.
In a press conference, Ancelotti shared his thoughts about the situation. He said (via Fabrizio Romano):
"It’s very difficult to be Vinícius, To put up with all the insults and everything that happens to him and that has happened."
He added:
"It's not that easy, but he tries to improve and endure all of it… and I keep thinking that in Valencia, that was a yellow card."
Despite the recent setback, Vinicius remains a key player for Real Madrid in attack. In 21 appearances, he has scored 13 goals and registered nine assists this season.
