It has been seven years since the legendary Francesco Totti hung up his boots, but the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner is reportedly eyeing a shock Serie A return.
One of the game's finest midfielders of his generation and one-club players, the 48-year-old spent his entire career with AS Roma, contributing 307 goals and 207 assists in 785 games across competitions.
Totti won one Serie A and two Coppa Italia titles with his boyhood club and won the World Cup with Italy, having won the European U-21 competition with them a decade earlier.
As per Sky Sports, Totti - now 48 - said that the current level of Serie A is such that he could ' easily make an impact', fueling speculation that he could be making a shock return.
As per ESPN, he said:
"There were Serie A teams that called me. I admit that they made me think a little, a little crazy. It would be difficult, but in life you never say never.
"There are players who have played many years after the end of their career. It also depends on where you play, with all due respect, but if I were to return to Serie A I would have to train really well."
Totti, though, ruled out joining Lazio, considering that they are arch-rivals of his boyhood club Roma:
"Lazio? I wouldn't even consider it. I'd be ready in two to three months -- I'm still playing at 48. If I had to do something crazy, I'd do it in Italy, not abroad, but it is crazy."
Totti's former side Roma are 10th in Serie A, while Lazio are seventh.
Serie A legend Francesco Totti explains thought process behind his retirement
One of Italian football's best ever players, Francesco Totti shed light on the thought process behind his retirement from the game seven years ago. He called time on his career at the end of the 2016-17 season.
Talking about his retirement, Totti said (as per the aforementioned interview) that he never 'wanted' to retire but that knew that all good things eventually come to an end:
"When you turn the page you never know what awaits you. It wasn't my choice, but in that moment it has to be experienced differently from the context.
"Maybe that's also why I've had that thing inside me. It's true that there's a beginning and an end to everything. I didn't want it, and so that window remained open."
Going by Francesco Totti's words, it seems his storied Roma story might not have had its last chapter yet.
