On the back of a stunning season that has seen him already hit double digits in goals scored, Aaron Ramsey is set to give Arsenal yet another boost. Reports emerging from North London are that the Welshman is set to sign a vastly improved five-year contract with the club this week. Although official numbers aren’t out yet, the figure is expected to in excess of £100,000 a week, more than doubling his current salary. It would also make him the second-highest paid player at Arsenal, behind record-signing Mesut Özil.
Although the 23-year-old still has two years remaining in his contract, Arsenal are keen to tie him down for the foreseeable future. It merely illustrates how much he has improved, ever since signing from Cardiff City six years ago for just £5m. Arsène Wenger has always been a keen admirer of the Welshman and this new deal show just how highly regarded he is at the club.
Many thought that Ramsey’s career was over when he fractured his fibula and tibia in a challenge with Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross at the Britannia Stadium four years ago. Although it has taken a long time, Ramsey has shown this season that he has well and truly recovered, both psychologically and physically, from the trauma of that career-threatening injury. Whilst it has been a long time coming, this season Ramsey has demonstrated that Wenger was right to keep the faith.
After finishing the previous campaign on a high, Ramsey started this season like a man possessed, and it were his goals that helped propel Arsenal to the top of the League. Ramsey had already scored 15 goals for both club and country before the end of November and began attracting interest from Europe’s elite. However, after having stood by the player through thick and thin, the manager has once again shown his unwavering faith in the 23-year-old by offering him a lucrative new contract at the earliest opportunity.
Negotiations between Ramsey’s agent, David Baldwin, and Arsenal have been going on for the past month and the club are set to announce confirmation of the new contract in the next 48 hours. The news will come as a welcome relief to both Wenger and Arsenal supporters who were worried about his future at the club.
Before his injury at the turn of the year, his commanding performances meant that he went into the New Year as one of the favourites for the Professional Footballers Association’s Player of the Year. But, a thigh strain in the 3-1 victory at West Ham United on Boxing Day didn’t help matters, neither did the fact that the same problem was aggravated in training, which has kept him out of the side for the past two months.
Reports coming from the Emirates are that Ramsey has finally returned to full training this week. And, although there is no possibility of Ramsey featuring in the FA Cup quarter-final against Everton on Saturday, there is still an outside chance that he will be in the squad that travels to Munich next Tuesday.
