Arsenal are stepping up their interest on Southampton’s Calum Chambers as Arsene Wenger looks to inject fresh impetus into his Gunners’ side after their title challenge fell apart once again this season, according to the Mirror.
Chambers has reportedly also attracted the attentions of Tottenham Hotspur, but Wenger is keen to land the youngster in the summer as back-up for the ageing Bacary Sagna.
Sagna is close to agreeing a new contract to remain at the Emirates after months of speculation that he could look to leave the club at the end of the season, with his current deal due to expire, but Wenger wants an alternative option to Carl Jenkinson as the Frenchman’s deputy, or replacement if he were to leave.
Chambers has caught the attention this season after breaking through into the Southampton first team, ousting Nathaniel Clyne from the starting lineup on several occasions.
He is believed to have a bright future in the game after making several appearances for the England Under 21 squad and the Saints’ could be tempted to sell in order to help the level of debt they have encountered from the previous regime.
The sale of Chambers could go a long way to easing those debts and would allow them to hold onto their more established stars such as Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana, who are both linked with big money moves to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.
Chambers would cost the Gunners £10 million plus, but Wenger is believed to be happy to fork out that amount for a player that he believes could be Arsenal’s right-back fro years to come.
