Arsenal are reportedly set to bring Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez to the Emirates Stadium according to the Daily Mail. Suarez, who played a huge role in Atletico’s La Liga title win last season, has fallen out of favour at the Vicente Calderon this season and Arsene Wenger could offer him an escape route.
Spanish media have been reporting that Suarez will ‘almost certainly leave’ Atletico this January as he demands first team football, and with Arsenal’s midfield options currently limited due to Mikel Arteta’s absence, a move would make sense. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are also missing due to injuries.
Wenger has been forced to recall Francis Coquelin from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic due to these injuries, and with Mathieu Flamini far from his best this season, Arsenal need to buy a solid performer for the long-term.
Suarez would be perfect for the Premier League, doing well in Simeone’s high tempo, hard working title-winning side last season. He has seen Saul Niguez and Tiago force him onto the bench more often this year, and is actively seeking a move away.
The Spaniard has two caps for his country, and at 27 has plenty of years left in him at the top level. A move for him and for Arsenal would make perfect sense, but they might have to fight off competition from other parties if Atletico look to sell quickly and cheaply.
