Rumour: Arsenal targetting PSG's Blaise Matuidi

Arsenal have turned to Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi to help ease their midfield problems after suffering an injury crisis at the Emirates, according to Goal.

Santi Cazorla became the latest to limp off the field in the 2-2 draw with Southampton, with Theo Walcott already ruled out for the season and Aaron Ramsey suffering an injury set-back that has delayed his return from a groin injury.

Mathieu Flamini also picked up a straight red for a vicious tackle, forcing him to miss three games with suspension, and manager Arsene Wenger has stated he is keen to bring in extra recruitments to help bolster the Gunners’ title challenge.

Matuidi’s future has been the topic of a lot of discussion recently, with his current deal with the French club due to expire at the end of the season.

While PSG are keen to keep hold of a player they regard as an integral member of the squad, the signing of Yohan Cabaye gives them further options in the centre of the park, leaving them potentially more open to striking a deal before the transfer window slams shut, in the hope of recouping some money on the French international.

With Juventus’ Paul Pogba also a target for the summer and no renewal on the horizon for Matuidi, Arsenal could well tempt their resolve with a late bid.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all been credited with an interest in the midfielder already this January and Arsenal make it a quartet as they look to bring in reinforcements for a title challenge that took a blow at St Mary’s.

Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin has been mooted as a back-up plan should PSG reject Arsenal’s advances, while Julian Draxler and Sebastian Jung also remain targets for a lot foray into the transfer market.

Only Aaron Ramsey (56) has made more tackles than the 44 Matuidi has made this season in Arsenal’s midfield and none come close to his phenomenal 70% success rate.
