Arsenal are lining up a £32 million bid to bring Real Madrid midfielder Angel Di Maria to the Premier League this summer.
The 26-year-old’s future at the Bernabeu appeared to be over when Gareth Bale completed a world record transfer from Tottenham Hotspur last season, but the Argentine has reinvented himself in an unfamiliar central midfield role.
Although still more than capable on the flank, Di Maria has proved that he can be deployed as an attacking midfielder, with his superb energy levels and ability to press the ball well suited to Arsenal’s free flowing style.
A move with such a substantial fee attached would have seemed unthinkable on the red half of north London only a matter of seasons ago but Arsene Wenger has declared his willingness to spend large fess with the purchase of Di Maria’s team mate Mesut Ozil for £42.4 million last summer.
The Gunners are keen to bolster their squad size, report the Metro, as injuries during the current campaign effectively derailed their hopes of the Premier League title as several key men were sidelined at critical moments.
Meanwhile, Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be keen to retain the Di Maria’s services, but also willing to allow him to leave if a suitable replacement is found.
Di Maria has attracted interest from Manchester United amongst a number of other European clubs and Arsenal will need to move quickly if they are to secure a move ahead of their rivals.
