Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has made Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa his top summer transfer target, according to the Metro.
The Blues chief has informed the club’s hierarchy, including owner Roman Abramovich, that a marquee signing to lead his side’s attack is his priority when the transfer window re-opens.
Despite being linked with a host of prestigious talent, including Radamel Falcao, Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain, the Portuguese boss has decided Costa is his first choice.
The Brazilian-born front man, who scored a brace in the 4-1 Champions League victory over Milan in midweek, is having a stunning season for Diego Simeone’s side as they battle to end Barcelona and Real Madrid’s dominance at the top of La Liga.
His scintillating form has not gone unnoticed around Europe and several prestigious outfits are set to test the waters ahead of the World Cup with a bid for the 25-year-old, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Costa is rated at £27 million and Mourinho plans to use Atletico’s close relationship with Chelsea to secure a deal, as the Spaniards currently have Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois on loan.
