Serie A champions Juventus are plotting a move to sign 20-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder, Mahmoud Dahoud, according to reports by Tuttosport. Having tracked the player for the last 12 months, the Italian giants are now reportedly ready to make a bid for him.
The Germany Under-21 midfielder has been under the radar of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp for a very long time but the advances of Juventus may scupper any chances the German has to sign Dahoud. Liverpool were heavily linked with the player in the summer transfer window. However, the energetic midfielder decided to stay at Borussia Mönchengladbach to play regular football.
Born in Amuda, Syria, Mahmoud Dahoud and his family fled to Germany to escape the tyrannous Assad regime. He played at a junior level for Fortuna Dusseldorf before switching over to Borussia Mönchengladbach at the age of 14. He broke into the first team four years later, at the age of 18, but made only 3 appearances that season.
After the sacking of Gladbach boss Lucien Favre, the new manager Andre Schubert saw him as a key figure in the midfield, which meant that he was a regular starter in the team. In his second full season, he completed 41 games in all competitions, scoring 5 goals in the process.
Dahoud’s contract at Mönchengladbach expires at the end of next season and he is yet to sign an extension. Plenty of bids may come Gladbach’s way in the coming transfer windows for the youngster, and if they don’t sell, they face the risk of their most talented player leaving the club on a free transfer. His transfer value will decrease over time as his contract runs out, and top clubs will be willing to wait if Mönchengladbach refuse to sell, or ask for an exorbitant transfer fee.
Borussia Mönchengladbach are aware of this fact and will attempt to tie him up to a new contract, however, their last attempt failed miserably. In August, his agent revealed that Dahoud rejected a new contract to ensure that he would be able to leave the club at the end of the season, with football heavyweights like Juventus, Liverpool, and PSG looming.
Dahoud’s relentless pressing and work rate on the pitch has made him an instrumental part of the Borussia Mönchengladbach team for the last two seasons, who surprisingly find themselves in 13th position in the Bundesliga. He has 1 goal and 2 assists in 7 league games as of now, and if he keeps up this stellar form, it is inevitable that he will be on his way out of Borussia-Park very soon.
