Liverpool are reportedly set to break their club record transfer fee to bring Real Madrid midfielder Isco to Merseyside, reports the Metro.

Brendan Rodgers is believed to be weighing up a £37 million move for the Spaniard, if they can succeed in their quest for a Champions League place.

Qualification to Europe’s pinnacle competition would bring in a huge boost in revenue, with a large proportion likely to be given to the northern Irishman in order to strengthen his squad.

The 21-year-old is viewed as a possible replacement for Reds skipper Steven Gerrard, who has fulfilled a deeper lying midfield role in recent weeks, whereas the energetic Madrid man is still utilised in an attacking role.

The youngster has failed to secure a regular place in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting line up following the arrival of Gareth Bale and the excellent form of Luka Modric. Reports have suggested the former Malaga man is unsettled and frustrated that he has failed to develop adequately during his debut season at the Bernabeu.

However, Liverpool are likely to face stiff competition for his signature should he become available as the midfielder has also been linked with Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The reported £37 million fee Liverpool are reportedly willing to part with would minimally surpass the £35 million they splashed out on striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle United.

Isco has completed a full 90 minutes for Real Madrid in La Liga this season on just six occasions.
