Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is ready to renew his interest in Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand, according to the Telegraph.
With Jose Enrique injured and Aly Cissokho’s loan deal not going well, Rodgers is thought to be targeting Bertrand as he sees left-back as a priority area in January.
Enrique is out until at least February after recently undergoing knee surgery and the Liverpool manager believes Bertrand can be the club’s first-choice left-back in the meantime.
Chelsea rejected an approach for the young full-back in the summer which prompted Rodgers to look to Cissokho but their interest is now reignited due to the injury crisis and poor form of the Frenchman.
Bertrand played for Chelsea in their Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich in 2012 but has failed to impress Jose Mourinho who has decided to use right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in place of the injured Ashley Cole.
This means Bertrand is now seeking first-team action and a move up north to Liverpool could be just the answer he’s looking for.
He is settled in west London but Rodgers believes he can persuade the 24-year-old to move away from the capital.
Apparently Chelsea will demand around £8 million for the full-back which may be a sticking point in any negotiations, with Liverpool looking to spend much less than that.
Ryan Bertrand’s 97% pass success rate is the highest at Chelsea for anyone to have passed the ball more than eight times.
