Rumour: Liverpool to rival Arsenal for Karim Benzema

Liverpool could be about to make a summer statement of intent, with reports in Spain suggesting that they have been contacted about a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

Spanish newspaper Marca believe that a deal is possible, should Liverpool qualify for the Champions League, with Benzema said to be receptive to a switch.

Reports suggest that a third party has contacted Liverpool about a move for Benzema, with the agent in question sounding out the club about a summer deal. The French striker is believed to be open to a move away from Real Madrid, having failed to ever fully establish himself amongst the club’s support.

Benzema moved to Madrid from Lyon in 2009, but has been constantly linked with a move away in recent years.

He has often been linked with Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal, but reports now suggest that he could be lining up against them next season.

The move would be dependent upon Liverpool qualifying for the Champions League next season and would cost in the region of £25 million.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made no secret of his desire to add depth to his squad next season, with his current starting eleven strong but the bench lacking in quality.

A move for Benzema would be a coup for the club, particularly if they could keep hold of both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, and would signal that the club could sustain a serious challenge at the top of the table after years in the wilderness.
