Brendan Rodgers has earmarked Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler as potential back-up for Simon Mignolet, according to Talk Sport.
While the Belgian keeper is Liverpool’s undisputed number one, with Australian Brad Jones his current understudy, the Anfield chief is keen to add another shot stopper to his squad in order to provide competition for the pair. Although Mignolet’s place is safe at club level for the meantime, he has been involved in a public dispute with countryman Thibaut Courtois over the battle to be Belgium’s first-choice.
Zieler spent five years at Manchester United as a youngster but failed to feature for the first-team before returning to his homeland with the Bundesliga outfit. The 25-year-old has represented Germany at a variety of age groups and also has two full international caps to his name.
Although he was highly-rated by former Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson, the Scot could not accommodate Zieler in his squad due to the excellent options at his disposal with the youngster eventually growing frustrated and opting to leave in the search of first team football.
Zieler has impressed this season and has become one of Europe’s most coveted goalkeepers with a number of clubs reportedly interested.
If Rodgers is to succeed in bringing the glory days back to Anfield, it is small additions such as this that will bolster the overall strength within his squad that struggles to compete financially with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
Ron-Robert Zieler has made 21 appearances for Hannover 96 this season and boasts a claim success rate of 96%.
