Liverpool boss Arne Slot looks on.

Joe Gomez is reportedly contemplating his Liverpool future after not making the matchday squad to face Ipswich Town on Saturday (August 17) at Portman Road in their Premier League opener.

Gomez, the Merseysiders' longest-serving player, has been left out, with captain Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate being the three central defenders in the squad.

Gomez's future at Anfield has been up in the air for a while. The Reds reportedly accepted a £45 million bid from Newcastle as part of their pursuit of Anthony Gordon, but the Magpies pulled the plug on the deal.

Newcastle reportedly still hold an interest in Gomez, and Aston Villa are also among his potential suitors. Non-English clubs are also monitoring Gomez's situation.

New Reds boss Arne Slot isn't actively looking to sell the player. He would rather have Gomez in the team, so the player could fight to get his place back in the pecking order.

Gomez. 27, has been with Liverpool since 2015 and has made 224 appearances across competitions but has bagged nine assists. He has also won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

Gomez's current deal with the Reds runs till 2027, and the defender has an estimated market value of €28 million, as per Transfermarkt.

Arne Slot happy with the state of Liverpool's current side

Arne Slot is happy with the players he has with him at Liverpool at the moment. The Dutch manager has said that his predecessor Jurgen Klopp left the team in a good state, so he hopes to build from there.

Slot added that he's hoping to win a trophy with the team this season. However, he recognises that it won't be easy, as the Premier League is full of difficult opponents (via the Reds' website):

"We are always talking here about transfers, but it's also a very positive thing that we kept out players, and they're in a good place at the moment.
"I said many times already: Jurgen left the team in a good place, and we are trying to build from there, and last season was also a season where they could win a trophy with this team."

Liverpool finished third in the Premier League last season and won the EFL Cup.
