Manchester United managerial target Louis van Gaal wants to sign Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller if he is appointed Old Trafford boss report the Express.
The Dutch coach is believed to be on the brink of agreeing a deal to become David Moyes’ successor at the Red Devils, before his commitments to the Holland national side’s preparations for the World Cup begin, but it is thought that van Gaal will be officially unveiled on Tuesday.
Van Gaal enjoyed a successful stint in charge of the Bundesliga outfit between 2009-11 and knows several of their current side well, including Muller. He gave the youngster his first chance at the Allianz Arena and is keen to be reunited with the 24-year-old.
The German international has spent his entire career with Munich but has reportedly grown frustrated with his restricted role under current coach Pep Guardiola.
Contracted until 2017 and firmly a fans favourite, the Bavarian outfit will be unlikely to allow the forward to leap on the cheap, but van Gaal could make an approach for another member of their squad in the form of midfielder Toni Kroos.
Given that German football is in such a strong position at present it is unsurprising that van Gaal has reportedly opted to lead an overhaul of United’s struggling squad with the addition of several Bundesliga stars with Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Mats Hummels also rumoured to be potential targets.
Thomas Muller has created 52 chances for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this season, only Franck Ribery (56) has managed more.
