According to the Sun, Manchester City pulled the plug on a deadline day loan deal for Jack Rodwell, which could have seen the Englishman return to Everton for the remainder of the season.
The Citizens did so after the deal for Porto midfielder Fernando fell through in the dying minutes of the winter window.
The promising playmaker moved to Manchester in 2012 for a hefty fee, but has started only 10 games since.
A move in the summer might be more plausible for the out of favour midfielder, who is desperate to end his nightmare at the Etihad, and former team Everton will be favorites to land him.
