Today’s Ridiculous Rumour of the Day is brought to you by Gazzetta Dello Sport who claim Manchester United want to sign Sunderland’s Vito Mannone as a backup for David de Gea.
The Italian daily claims David Moyes would like him as De Gea’s understudy as it seems certain that Anders Lindegaard will leave the club in the near future.
Lindegaard may leave the club in the summer to seek first-team football after acting as second-choice at United since signing in 2010 for £3.5 million.
His departure would open the door for Moyes to move for Mannone, says the report in Gazzetta.
That would make a domino effect with Gus Poyet then able to go out and sign Mariano Andujar, the Argentine second-choice goalkeeper, who he has already admitted to having an interest in.
“I like the style of South American goalkeepers,” Poyet admitted, “and Andújar is a player that I like, and I know.”
However, Andujar is certain he will only move for guaranteed first-team football so any move depends entirely on the future of Vito Mannone.
Mannone has kept six clean sheets in 12 Premier League games for Sunderland this season.
