Ruud Gullit: "Nobody wanted to be the next Manchester United manager"

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has claimed that Manchester United were very fortunate to make it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. While the ex-Chelsea manager also defended David Moyes.

United have had a terrible season and are currently in seventh place in the Premier League. They were knocked out of the FA Cup and Capital One Cup in early-2014 and faced elimination from the Champions League after a first leg 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos.

They turned it around at Old Trafford in the second leg thanks to Robin van Persie’s hat-trick but Gullit claims they were very lucky to make it through.

He said: “Manchester United have nothing to lose. They have come from a situation where it is already a miracle that they qualified for this stage. Therefore they need a success. It’s not fun to see Manchester United in this situation, because we want them to be “Manchester United”, you know?

“Although they are having their difficulties just wait, allow Moyes to buy his players in the summer.”

Gullit added: “Of course they need to give him a chance. You know, everybody knew that nobody wanted to be the successor of Ferguson. But they now want to be the successor of Moyes. That’s the point.

“He’s the only one that can change that. Give him the opportunity.”
