SAFF Championship 2013: This win is for every Afghan around the world – Afghanistan’s Azadzoy

The SAFF Championship 2013 final could have gone either way as both teams had chances, especially India, but in the end Afghanistan finished two opportunities and lifted their maiden South Asian title.

One of the key moments of the game was the opening goal scored by Afghanistan’s Germany-based wide midfielder Mustafa Azadzoy and he admitted that it was the most important strike of his career.

“This is the most important goal of my career for sure. It was a tough game and India played very well but I think we deserved to win in the end,” Azadzoy told Sportskeeda.

It’s an incredible achievement for the war-torn nation as they were completely inactive at international level even ten years ago and Afghanistan’s number seven revealed what the triumph means for his nation.

“Today’s victory is massive for Afghanistan. We are delighted to win the SAFF Championship trophy and would like to dedicate this win to all Afghans around the world,” he said.

But Afghanistan’s triumph shouldn’t be that much of a surprise considering they were the highest ranked team in the sub-continent coming into this tournament and Azadzoy believes this is the golden era of Afghanistan football.

“We have improved a lot in the last two years and following this win, maybe, yes it is fair to say that this is the golden period of Afghanistan football,” he concluded.
