Having released former Australia U-20 World Cupper Sean Rooney, Salgaocar are now set to sign former Singapore international John Wilkinson, who last played for Home United in Singapore’s S-League.
Wilkinson, now 33, was born in Exeter and played six years for Exeter City but moved to Singapore in 2002 and by 2007, had played for three clubs in the South-East Asian country. He soon became a Singapore citizen and won 29 international caps for them between 2007 and 2010.
Being an attacking midfielder, Wilkinson isn’t a natural replacement for striker Rooney but Philippines international attacking medio Angel Guirado could also be released, thus Wilkinson could become an important addition.
“Everything has been done and we expect him (Wilkinson) to reach Goa by the end of this month. We are going to talk to Guirado once he is back from international duty. We are still looking at a few other players as we need a goal scorer,” Salgaocar secretary R.A.J. Gomes told sportskeeda.
2010-11 champions Salgaocar are surprisingly languishing in the relegation zone of the I-League table with just six points from 10 matches and thus the club management was keen on changing the foreigners with new coach David Booth also not impressed by the players originally signed by Karim Bencherifa, who is now in charge of Mohun Bagan.
