Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has used the German press to hit out at his treatment by their Spanish counterparts, claiming in Kicker that they he is “insulted,” and that there are off pitch reasons behind his treatment. Khedira’s admissions of disillusionment will have potentially put alleged suitors – rumoured to have included Arsenal (Daily Mirror), Manchester United and Chelsea – on red alert.
“I feel insulted by the Spanish press. I will never be one of their favourite sons,”
“I began the season on the bench and once again I’ve been made a scapegoat. They don’t value me, even when I play well.”
Khedira further endeared himself to his media critics by suggesting the reasons for their dislike of him.
“I’m not Spanish, I didn’t cost a lot and I’m a disciple of Mourinho.”
Carlo Ancelotti’s Real side have struggled so far in La Liga, and find themselves in third place in the table behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The German international suggested that the absence of a fellow disciple of Mourinho may be to blame, continuing:
“Is it down to losing Mesut Ozil? The loss of a quality player like Mesut would weaken any team.”
“A lot of players have lamented him leaving, including me. To lose a player with his qualities weakens the team, but we have other players of quality.
We aren’t playing well. We may have had some good moments, but for large parts of games we have been playing in a complicated way, we have been too individual.”
“I don’t know if it’s just a question of time, or something else, but we still haven’t found ourselves as a team.”
Real lost 21% of the 19 games that Khedira started in La Liga last season. Of the 17 games that he didn’t start they only lost 6%.
