Cameroon head-coach Volker Finke has stated that Samuel Eto’o’s international appearance against Libya on Sunday could be his last. The coach’s revelation comes in the middle of rumours that Chelsea‘s new signing could quit international football, ESPN reports.
Eto’s was on the field for Cameroon’s 1-0 victory against Libya on Sunday, and the win secured his country’s place in the next World Cup qualifying round. After the match, there were reports that Eto’o had told his team mates that he was contemplating immediate retirement.
The 32-year-old’s retirement plans come amid concerns about Cameroon’s competence to qualify for the World Cup without the leadership of their captain. Finke offered no comment of the possibility of Eto’o retiring from international football.
“Samuel Eto’o is a great player and it is better that he should be the one to explain things,” Finke said. “He is the only one who can explain why he took the decision.
“Of course, he has given a lot to football in general and for Cameroonian football in particular. I cannot say more than this because he is the only one to explain this.”
Eto’o, who recently joined Chelsea, started his career at Real Madrid and has had stints in Barcelona and Inter Milan. He has scored 55 goals for the Cameroon national team.
