Sergio Aguero had a brilliant debut season in the Premier League back in the 2011/12 campaign, a season in which he scored 23 league goals which were crucial in helping Manchester City secure their first Premier League title. Last year, however, the Argentine striker did not quite hit the heights, only managing to net 12 league goals in his 30 appearances. So far this season he looks like has rekindled his form from the City’s title-winning campaign, can he maintain his current rate to earn himself a the Premier League’s golden boot?
Aguero’s seven league goals in just eight games have led to him being second in the top goal scoring charts in the Premier League. In fact, in just eight games he has surpassed half the number of goals he hit over 30 games last season, which demonstrates a real improvement in his game.
Against West Ham he was critical, scoring twice and assisting the third goal. In the context that City hadn’t won a Premier League away game all season it was crucial that his form helped his side get a big result and win their first away game 3-1. Despite losing to Chelsea last time out, Aguero once again performed admirably for the Manchester club, dispatching is second-7half goal with aplomb.
Aguero’s form has of course led to him being the second top scorer with seven. I have compared him here to other leading scoring strikers. Daniel Sturridge is clearly leading the way with his eight goals and has been in very, very good form for Liverpool this season and will no doubt be there challenging for the top goalscorer award come May.
From Aguero’s point of view we can see that he has the highest chance conversion and the highest shot accuracy of the players listed. This implies that if chances continue to fall for him (which they inevitably will) then he subsequently will score goals. The worry for those chasing him, notably Olivier Giroud and Robin van Persie, is their weak chance conversion when compared to Aguero.
Aguero will definitely be up there slogging it out for the right to be called the best marksman in the Premier League. The Argentinian striker’s form will be crucial for Manchester City as they look to reclaim their Premier League title. With his pace and movement he can unsettle any defence and he has shown this season in the first eight games that he has his shooting boots on this season.
