Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has admitted that he came close to joining Manchester United when they came calling last summer. The centre-back emerged as a target for the Old Trafford club when there was intense speculation about David De Gea moving in the opposite direction.
There was a contractual dispute between Ramos and Madrid at that time, and United were ready to offer Sergio Ramos an escape route. However, Ramos eventually tied his future to Los Blancos signing a long term contract.
The Madrid captain did admit that a move to Manchester United was a distinct possibility last summer.
"There was an offer from United," Ramos told COPE. "I considered changing for a while but Real Madrid was always my priority and there were no economic reasons."
"Did I feel cheated [by Madrid]? No, but I did feel disappointed for a while. There were some troubles that came to an end."
"I have not heard about [interest from Chelsea]. Many things have always been said.
"Flattery from big clubs is always good as this is because you are doing well, but if the fans and my club want me."
After having an indifferent start to the season, Ramos has found his best form once again and Zidane will be looking to count on his club captain as Madrid look to challenge for both the La Liga and the Champions League.
Confident Zidane targets both La Liga and Champions League
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has insisted that he will not settle for just the second place in La Liga.
"Today I wouldn't sign for that", said Zidane when asked if he would settle for winning Madrid's 11th Champions League at the expense of La Liga.
We need to keep going until the end of the season".
Karim Benzema put in an accomplished performance last night and Zidane was pleased that his countryman did not let his head drop after it was decided that he will not be participating in the Euros.
"It did affect him and yes he is disappointed, but he is a professional and he knows that on the field he is very important for the team", Zidane said of his compatriot Benzema.
"Today he scored and played very well, so he is very concentrated on what he is doing".
Real Madrid are currently third in La Liga, one point behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
