Should Chelsea sell John Obi Mikel?

FC Shakhtar Donetsk v Chelsea FC - UEFA Champions League

I was surprised this morning to read reports that John Obi Mikel is the subject of transfer speculation with Galatasaray reportedly in talks to sign the Nigerian.

Having spent seven years at Chelsea Mikel has matured into an effective defensive midfielder with a big game mentality.

He may not be popular with all fans and he can occasionally be guilty of giving the ball away and be frustrating but he has experience and the ability to still play a big supporting role for the club.

History At The Club

Having signed in controversial circumstances in 2006 Mikel has been a regular squad player in the side ever since averaging around 40 appearances a season across all competitions.

He has had eight different managers and is about to recommence working under the manager that was so instrumental in him joining the club.

He has had his ups and downs, favoured by Hiddink, Ancelotti and Roberto Di Matteo but unfancied by Andre Villas Boas and Rafa Benitez with the latter almost freezing him out entirely.

Despite the changing managerial situation he has won every domestic and European trophy available and played the game of his life in our victorious Champions League final. He is even able to claim an assist for Cech’s penalty save in extra time after getting into the head of Arjen Robben as he prepared to take the penalty.

Future at the Club

I believe that John Obi Mikel’s future depends on Nathan Ake, if Jose Mourinho has faith in Nathan Ake to be a reliable back up to David Luiz (who should be first choice) then it may be time to let the Nigerian go for a respectable fee.

However, if we need to replace him then he should stay as it would mean he has a role to play for Chelsea he may not be first choice but in this case I would keep hold of him.
