Sign Christian Eriksen and Mario Gomez and Liverpool have a top four attack

FC Bayern Muenchen VfB Stuttgart - DFB Cup Final

Mario Gomez

Now that Andy Carroll has left Liverpool and signed for West Ham in a £15.5million deal and the likelihood of Luis Suarez leaving Liverpool this summer being pretty high, it will be good for Liverpool fans to see their club being linked with two quality forwards. Carroll will not be missed a whole lot by the Liverpool fans. Some will say he should have been given another chance but however good Carroll is, he still carried the weight of his £35million price tag and moreover, his style of play never gelled with Liverpool’s ethos of playing the beautiful game. Luis Suarez is looking to leave Liverpool too and that leaves Liverpool with just Daniel Sturridge and the rotatable Iago Aspas as forward options.

If Suarez is to leave this summer, Liverpool would have to act fast and find two high quality replacements. Looking at who would fit the Liverpool style and would bring the Kop to life, Christian Eriksen of Ajax and Mario Gomez of Bayern Munich would fit the bill beautifully. The goal scoring record of Mario Gomez is exceptional: he has scored 75 in 115 games at Bayern. It wouldn’t necessitate Liverpool to play a long ball game and using him as a battering man because Gomez is much more than that. Not only can Gomez hold the ball up, he can be pretty sharp with his feet. And it is his finishing which is his strength. With the likes of Coutinho, Mkhitaryan and possibly Christian Eriksen floating around behind him he will have a feast of chances being fashioned for him. For all his flaws, he has always been a prolific and very consistent goal scorer. Consistency is something Daniel Sturridge doesn’t yet offer.

Eriksen would be the perfect partner for Gomez at Anfield. Eriksen and Gomez could create a Gerrard and Torres-like combination which was so successful for Liverpool under Rafa Benitez. The quick thinking, incisive passing and elegance of Gerrard would be replicated through Eriksen. In midfield Eriksen and Coutinho would give any defence a headache as both players are quick and possess the ability to create something when you need it most. They both have an exuberant and imaginative passing range, and vision for a pass most players would dream of having.

Eriksen, Coutinho, Sturridge and Gomez is a formidable line up and would certainly get Liverpool further up the table. Add in Mkhitarayan, Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas and Liverpool would have depth and threat in all forward positions. With Gerrard, Lucas and Allen sitting in midfield allowing these attacking players to do what they do best, it could be a healthy future for Liverpool.

Eriksen is coming in to the last year of his contract at Ajax and Mario Gomez has evidently been asked to look for options outside Germany as he doesn’t fit into Guardiola’s Munich. They could probably be purchased for a combined £30m fee, which can be paid from the £50m they receive for Suarez.

If they could get them though, the top four is in range for next season.
