So the news is out. Neymar is going to Barcelona for 5 seasons and Twitter and Facebook are all abuzz with it. Of course, as a Barcelona fan, I am happy to hear this. Neymar is, from what I have heard, a pretty good player. He has also been touted as the next Pele! And boy, it will be a treat to watch the ‘Next Maradona’ play alongside the ‘Next Pele’, won’t it?
Yes, all in all, I think Barcelona have their attack sorted out. But at the same time, Neymar or no Neymar, Barcelona has to look at its defense. As much as it hurts me to say this, their defending is horrible. It makes the beauty of Tiki Taka pointless! On every counter-attack, Barcelona suffers. That is where the issue of signing Neymar seems just plain stupid to me.
Why? Why, in God’s name, would Barcelona sign another striker? They already have Messi, who is considered by many as the world’s best player. They also have other talents like Villa (who may or may not be out soon) and Sanchez. These are all good strikers who can play. So what exactly is the point in purchasing Neymar?
At this rate, Barcelona will get 11 strikers and nothing else. The beauty that players like Xavi and Iniesta bring will be forgotten by the barrage of strikers. The strength and adamant attitude of Puyol will be a part of history. The incredible saves of Valdes will be forgotten.
The truth is, Barcelona needs a defender. Barcelona train many young talents, but their emphasis on midfield is not practical. The Tiki Taka has been decoded, Barcelona has not been thrashed but destroyed. All because they didn’t have decent defenders. Puyol would have stopped the barrage but Puyol was injured. What then? And Puyol won’t play forever, so they must look at a good replacement.
But Barcelona insisted on signing a striker. Neymar is a good striker but the move, overall, is downright foolish. Barcelona have always made this mistake! They sign a striker when they need a defender! But I cannot complain; after all, Barcelona is Barcelona. They know what they are doing, I hope.
Anyway, best of luck to Neymar in Barcelona and may he enjoy his stay there. Also, may we, the spectators, get to enjoy some Joga Bonita in La Liga too.
