Ex-Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that Wayne Rooney is back to his best this season. BBC Sport reports.
Ferguson had stated after his final match at Old Trafford last term that the club had turned down a transfer request submitted by Rooney. Chelsea had also made two bids for the forward which we’re subsequently rejected.
The 71-year-old who now enjoys a director’s role at Manchester United is thrilled with Rooney’s performance so far this season.
“Wayne was fantastic [against Bayer Leverkusen]. I’m pleased to see that,” he told MUTV.
“He’s got his energy back, the determination, his purpose to attack. As a director, I’m delighted to see him back to what we always remember him.”
The England international had previously confessed in July that he was “angry and confused” about his time at United.
Ferguson’s successor David Moyes eventually succeeded in warding off interest from rival clubs and convinced his former Everton prodigy that his future was at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old made a sensational return from a head injury against Crystal Palace, scoring the second goal of the game, and going on to hand Moyes his first victory at Old Trafford. The striker became the fourth player to net 200 goals for the club, scoring twice in the 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
Ferguson added: “With [Robin] Van Persie and Rooney, there are forwards that can win games and [Antonio] Valencia’s back to his best.”
Rooney is expected to lead the United attack in the upcoming Manchester derby.
