16th May 2012- Kenny Dalglish sacked as the Liverpool manager after a woeful Premier League season.
1st June 2012- Brendan Rodgers unveiled as the new manager of Liverpool by Fenway Sports Group.
So what was the response by the fans all over the globe? For some, it was on optimistic appointment because the style of play used by Rodgers at Swansea had helped them to achieve 11th position in that season after being just promoted. For some, there was skepticism as he had never managed a high profile football club like Liverpool and his CV did not boast of anything extraordinary.
18th August 2012 – After a good pre-season, the time had finally come for Liverpool to play their first competitive match in the Premier League against West Bromwich Albion. Fans like me were waiting in anticipation for this day. A wave of thrill and anxiety swept us all around. But after 90 minutes all anxiety and thrill were put to rest. Defeated 3-0!
So where does Brendan Rodgers stand now? Many have already started calling for the head of Brendan Rodgers as they think he is a misfit for a club like Liverpool. But if those guys turn back the pages of history they will remember the legendary Bill Shankly lost his first match as Liverpool manager 4-0 against Cardiff City in the Second Division. And after that, there was no turning back.
It’s just the start of the season and all is not lost with this defeat. There is quality in that team undoubtedly. There are enough players around which this Liverpool team can be made. Rodgers is just doing that and he just requires a little time so that his team can adapt to the style of play that he so well implemented at Swansea.
The club has been linked with various players with the likes of Sahin, Tello and Dempsey. Even the name of Adam Johnson is making the rounds now. Any of the above players making a move to Liverpool could strengthen the squad and provide the necessary depth.
So rather than losing hope and believing that the loss on first day is going to sum up the entire season we can show some more faithfulness to the club that we have been so proud of. It is just the beginning of the harsh reality that our team is in the process of rebuilding and we might not be championship contenders but rather than pointing fingers at the manager we should support him in the hour of need. Let him not walk alone cause we the fans are ones who provide the most strength in the hour of crisis. Our club needs it. And Rodgers is the man who can get things going well for us, but he needs a little time, just a little time.
