Mohun Bagan’s star striker Sony Norde is reportedly stalling on the latest contract offer by the I-League champions that would make him the most expensive player in Indian football history. This is a major setback for the Kolkata-based club as Sony drove Bagan to their first-ever I-League title.
After winning their first top-division title since 2001-02, Bagan had offered the Haitian the lucrative contract and have been waiting for him to sign the contract. The deal would see Sony earn Rs. 2.2 crores per year for the next three years.
However, reports claim that despite being happy with the financial aspect of the deal, Sony is looking for a reduction in the length of the contract. The current offer would see him commit his future to the club for three years, but he reportedly wants a shorter deal.
The reason behind him wanting a short-term deal is that he wants to try his luck in Europe according to a source.
The source claimed, “Sony wants to try his luck in Europe and does not want to be tied at Bagan. Also, much of Sony's contract with Bagan will depend on how much the Kolkata giants can extract from a franchise in the Indian Super League.”
Mohun Bagan are hopeful Sony would sign the contract and are hoping to recoup a significant portion of the outlay by loaning him out to an Indian Super League (ISL) franchise when the tournament begins.
Bagan are also sweating on the future of attacker Katsumi Yusa, who is yet to put pen to paper on a two-year deal worth Rs. 1.1 crores. It is reported that the Japanese is waiting to hear from last season’s I-League debutants Bharat FC.
